How Much Sugar Is Too Much in Dog Treats?Understanding sugar, carbohydrates, and what pet parents should look for.

When it comes to treats, most healthy dogs do best with minimal added sugar.

Dogs don’t need added sugar in their diet. Yet many commercial treats include sweeteners or high-carbohydrate fillers that increase overall sugar load — sometimes without pet parents realizing it.

Understanding how sugar works (and how carbohydrates convert to glucose) can help you make confident, thoughtful choices.

A Quick Note on Sugar & Carbs

Not all sugar looks the same on a label.

Added sugars (like cane sugar, syrups, molasses) are simple sugars added purely for sweetness.• Whole-food carbohydrates (like oats, sweet potatoes, fruits) naturally contain sugars that are released gradually during digestion.• The body converts carbohydrates into glucose for energy — but balance matters.

Whole-food carbohydrates aren’t the same as added sugars.

Ingredients like oats and sweet potatoes also provide fiber and nutrients, which help support steady digestion and overall wellness.

When Lower-Sugar Treats May Matter More

Some dogs benefit from more thoughtful treat choices:

• Dogs with diabetes• Overweight dogs• Senior dogs• Dogs with kidney concerns• Dogs on controlled veterinary diets

If your dog has a medical condition, it’s always best to speak with your veterinarian before changing treats.

What to Look for on a Label

You don’t need a science degree. Just look for:

• No added cane sugar or syrups• Simple, recognizable ingredients• Short ingredient lists• Recipes that don’t rely on unnecessary fillers

Simple labels are often a good sign.
